Senior living vs. nursing homes, do you know the difference?

Many people think senior living and nursing homes are the same, but there is a lot more to it. Nursing homes are primarily senior caring facilities where residents live because they have serious, ongoing physical or mental conditions that require constant care and supervision. But, many aging adults don’t require that level of care so on the flip side, memory care, assisted living, and independent living facilities—like Calson communities—offer luxury senior housing that caters to healthier aging adults that want or need some level of assistance.

Let’s break it down:

Nursing Homes

Also known as Skilled Nursing Facilities provide a wide range of health and personal care services. Their services focus on medical care including 24-hour nursing care and supervision, three meals a day, and assistance with everyday activities.

Independent living

Perfect for active adults looking to gain a little freedom by joining a community offering more convenience through a maintenance-free life. These communities provide plenty of amenities and the option to add more services as needed.

Assisted living

Designed for seniors who still want to have their own space but need help with daily activities. This option allows for personalized assistance to fit the needs of the resident and empowers them to stay as independent as possible.

Memory care

Designed to serve seniors with forms of dementia or other memory impairments, these communities provide a safe space for residents to call home. Through Calson's Aviator Program residents and their families receive memory-focused activities by caregivers trained to understand the challenges of memory loss. Offered at no charge to residents and their families, the goal of the program is to create a calm and secure community while promoting comfortable and interactive activities to engage residents in the latest thinking available.

Calson has been actively involved in senior living for over 30 years, and we are continuously innovating our communities for seniors throughout Northern California. Our family and team members work to provide a safe, engaging, and comfortable environment for our residents.
