Common misconceptions about senior care, DEBUNKED

There’s a lot of misconception about senior living communities floating around. It’s one reason many older adults don’t consider moving to a community due to a variety of misinformation. But not getting the correct information can mean missing out on all the benefits senior living communities has to offer.

Statement 1: Nursing homes and assisted living facilities are the same thing

False. Nursing homes are facilities that provide skilled nursing and rehabilitation services and often have rooms similar to what you might see in a hospital or clinical setting. On the other hand, assisted living facilities are much more homelike and only provide assistance with daily tasks that may be difficult or dangerous for some people to do independently, such as getting dressed and bathed.

Statement 2: Seniors who live in assisted living communities lose their independence

False. Seniors who live in assisted living communities are encouraged to be as independent as they are able. These communities provide residents with the assistance they need, but residents can make their own schedule and do many activities without help. Assisted living communities enable residents to remain independent for as long as possible so they can continue to live vibrant, fulfilling lives.

Statement 3: Seniors who live in assisted living communities are neglected by staff

False. This is a horrible thing to imagine for those with a loved one who needs care. Calson is dedicated to creating a welcoming environment where your loved ones can feel comfortable and happy, and you can feel confident they are receiving the care they need from a compassionate staff. We want every resident to feel safe and at home within our communities.

Statement 4: No healthy person needs a senior living community

False. While this is a common misconception, the truth is that seniors who choose to move to a senior living community often do so because they don’t want to worry about home and yard maintenance, shopping, and other daily chores anymore. Active seniors who move into senior communities do it because it lets them focus on the fun stuff and enjoy retirement.

Statement 5: Senior living communities are institutions

False. Senior living communities provide a comfortable atmosphere that is more like a home than a hospital. At Calson communities, we designed each community to ensure our residents feel safe and comfortable. We even recommend seniors bring items from home so the community feels familiar and filled with good memories.

It’s normal to feel apprehensive about moving a loved one into senior care but knowing the facts will make you and your loved one feel more confident and excited about joining a community.
