Bringing the farm to seniors

We are excited to announce that we have signed a deal with Vertical Field, an Israeli developer of vertical plant installations, to bring vertical farming systems to Calson Management assisted living communities in California. A demo unit will be installed at The Lodge at Glen Cove in Vallejo in the fall of 2021, with plans to expand to seven more centers following the successful pilot program.

The vertical plant installations are made up of separate blocks of plants that can be rearranged at will to create a green wall of vegetation. Using advanced sensors and monitors, climate control technology, and special lighting, these soil-based vertical farms operate in 20- and 40- foot containers to produce freshly harvested and pesticide-free products. The indoor farms can grow various fresh greens and other crops year-round with no seasonality barriers while minimizing supply chain logistics and storage and using 90 percent less water and 30 times less land than conventional farming methods.

By bringing the farm all the way to our residents, seniors can see where the food grows and enjoy high-quality produce, furthering a living home’s ability to create a happy, safe, and comfortable community,” said Jason Reyes, principal at Calson Management.
